New Building To Replace Elementary School

An elementary school in Windsor will soon be getting a major upgrade.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has approved a plan to construct a new building to replace the aging St. Bernard Catholic Elementary School. During their monthly meeting on Tuesday, the board awarded the $7.5-million construction project to Wincon Construction Inc. The project is being funded by the Ministry of Education.

Board Chair Barbara Holland says the board is very happy to finally announce that construction will begin within ten days.

"This is sort of a watershed moment for the board to finally see this happen," she says. "The parents have been so patient and the kids have been so wonderful, but we know the staff has been hard at work building a community."

The new JK to Grand 6 school will be built to accommodate 400 students from St. Bernard, as well as those from St. Jules Catholic Elementary School, which is slated to close.

"When this school opens up, it's going to have a new family in it made up of [two] different schools who are already working together, already getting to know one another," says Holland.

The new building for St. Bernard Catholic Elementary School will be located just southwest of the current building on Meldrum Rd., and it is set to open for the 2017-2018 school year. The old building is expected to be demolished after that.
