Two homes in Leamington have been evacuated due to a mixture of gases that were reportedly escaping from an abandoned well.
Officials with the Municipality of Leamington reported the incident Tuesday night and say the well is located outside of a residence on Robson Rd. near Malibu Dr. A localized emergency has been declared, and the two homes were evacuated as a precaution.
The municipality says it is working with emergency crews and has contacted the responsible ministries for assistance with the escaping gasses. Funding has also been requested from the province to deal with the issue.
Roads in the area are expected to be closed, except for local traffic, to facilitate monitoring equipment.
The municipality says any outdoor burning is banned in the immediate area until further notice.
