Although the City of Windsor is dealing with road flooding in areas and hundreds of calls about water-filled basements, its sewer system is handling the steady rainfall.
Executive Director of Operations Dwayne Dawson says it's pretty much at capacity and is overwhelmed during downbursts, but he's not seeing any failures.
"We're hoping for some breaks in the storm so that the system can react to it and lower itself down, try to keep a handle on the water that we're getting," he explains.
Dawson says Windsor's east end has been presenting the biggest challenge so far.
As of this morning, he says rain gauges showed about three to four inches (10 cm) had fallen there, compared to about two inches (5 cm) on the city's west side.
Anyone experiencing flooding issues is asked to call 311, so that the city can keep track of problem areas. At the same time, callers to 311 are asked to have patience as lines are often busy, resulting in a busy signal being heard. The city says operators are working hard to work through each call as quickly as possible and open up lines for new callers.
The city is residents to hold off on non-flooding related calls to 311 if possible, until the rain passes.
