Controversial Tender For Kingsville Park Awarded

Kingsville town council has awarded the tender for phase one of its redevelopment of Mettawas Park, but it's not without controversy.

Council has awarded the bid to Creative Homescapes, the preferred contractor of an anonymous donor to the project. Creative Homescapes original bid was $263,700, but council managed to negotiate that down to $217,000. However, that's still more the lowest bid by Quinlan Inc. for $190,600.

Councillor Thomas Neufeld the town isn't obligated to take the lowest bid, and given the size of the donation, he supports it.

"This donor is putting forward a substantial amount of money, and we're very grateful for that," he says. "If they want to have a say in the direction that it's going to go, then I support that."

The donor has pledged a total of $250,000.

Construction is expected to start within the next two weeks on the first phase which will include a memorial garden, pavilion and accessible walking trails.

Future phases will include a splash pad with change rooms and renovations at the Kings Landing Restaurant.

Neufeld says the pace of future phases will depend on the town's finances.
