New Program Addresses Youth Internet Addiction

As we spend more and more time online, a new program in Windsor seeks to address the growing concern of Internet addiction.

Joanna Conrad, the executive director of the Essex County Diversion Program, says an alarming number of young people are showing signs of an addiction to online activities, and some are exhibiting symptoms that threaten their physical and social well-being. She says the lack of sleep and social interaction is leaving some young people depressed.

"Youth Diversion staff recognized an increased trend amongst youth who identified with excessive video gaming habits," she says.

The trend appears to coincide with the 2015 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey released last month which found 13% of students surveyed between Grades 7 and 12 said they have a problem controlling their online use.

"Some kids are spending most of their time online – eight hours or more a day," says Conrad. "There are studies that are saying that the gratification that one gets from accessing their phone – is very similar to that which a gambler may receive from gambling."

With the help of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant for $225,000, the program called Time to L.A.G. [Learn About Gaming] is hoped to support youth aged 12 to 17-years develop emotional and social strengths. Referrals are open and can be made online.
