City Considering Goose Control

Windsor City Council will discuss the merits of a city-wide goose control program tonight.

For many years the city has been hearing complaints about the number of geese and amount of excrement found in city parks, particularly along the waterfront.

"They're considered a nuisance by some but they are also considered by others as part of the landscape so wildlife control programs are not without some contention and we have to be cognizant of that," says Director of Parks and Recreation Phil Roberts.

The report going to council Monday night includes many different options for councillors consider.

"Modifying the habitat that they occupy or excluding them from the space or even doing behaviour modification, using the biology of the bird to essentially scare it from that location," says Roberts.

As Canadian geese are a protected species whatever council decides will need to be approved by the Canada Wildlife Service.
