Amherstburg Vies For World Sledge Hockey Challenge

Having hosted the Senior Games, the Town of Amherstburg wants more.

Town council has given the green light to make a bid for either the 2017 or 2018 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. Town staff will work with Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island on the application.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says it could bring thousands of people to the town, but there's a hitch.

"You're talking thousands of people," he says. "Without talking about the elephant in the room which is accommodations. Even with that not quite addressed yet, we can still put on some excellent tournaments here."

Despite that challenge, DiCarlo thinks residents will embrace the event, and he's confident the Libro Credit Union Centre can handle it.

"We're very well laid out for that tournament, and we'll work with the regular users of the arena, and I'm sure they're behind it as well," he says.

This past year, the event was held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
