Highbury Canco Needs Hundreds Of Seasonal Workers

Highbury Canco in Leamington is in hiring mode.

The company is looking for 200 seasonal workers to help out during the tomato harvest, but some of those jobs may become permanent full-time later this fall. Right now, they need inspectors, operators for the tomato flumes and filling equipment.

President Sam Diab says they'll need at least 50 workers this fall when the company signs new contracts, maybe more.

"There's still a few contracts that we're working through with some customers," he says. "To get an exact number for it will be in October or November, so it's tough to say. I wouldn't be surprised if we're adding 70 or 80 full-time jobs."

Right now the plant employs 440 people full-time.

The harvest will be an unusually busy time at the facility. Last year, the plant shut down its regular operations during that period, but it has too many orders to fill this year.

"We're so busy now that we're actually running the facility on top of the regular seasonal operations," says Diab.

Diab says applicants can send in a resume anytime for the seasonal work, but there's also a job fair outside the plant on August 8. A tent will be sent up at the corner of Oak St. and Erie St. in Leamington.
