Under Budget, Open Streets Exceeds Expectations

An organizer of Sunday's Open Streets Festival in Windsor says the first installment was an overwhelming success, and the second in September may be even longer.

The City of Windsor's Manager of Programming Policy isn't making promises but says extending the hours beyond 9am to 1pm is under review.

"Some people have said 'could you make it a little bit longer in terms of duration'", Michael Cooke says. "The route's fine but people are saying four hours isn't enough time, 'could we have it five or six [hours]'".

Cooke says the steering committee that organized the event is still trying to figure out how many people took part but says it's safely in the thousands, and the response has been very positive.

"I've actually received emails, personally, from volunteers who have thanked me," he says. "They beat me to the gun."

He says the number of events and where they are situated along the 8km route won't likely change for the festival on September 18, but it might be even bigger.

"Early indications, just given with the success of the event there will be more people who want to be involved."

The city put aside $55,000 for the two events. Cooke says $30,000 was budgeted for the first event, but the actual cost was below that. He says many organizations came through with donations helping keep the costs low.
