Amherstburg Schools Top GECDSB Priority List

The new school consolidating General Amherst and Western Secondary students is getting top billing by the Greater Essex County District School Board.

In order to get money to build new schools, trustees had to send in a ranking of their capital priorities to the Ministry of Education by July 15.

Superintendent of Accommodations Todd Awender says the Amherstburg schools are costing the board a lot of money right now.

"There was a number of empty spaces both in Western and General Amherst," says Awender. "There are a lot of renewal dollars to keep the building going, because it is a very old building."

Second on the priority list was the request for money to add a family centre to the K-12 school in Kingsville which already has $44-million committed by the ministry to build the new facility.

Awender says age of the schools, renewal needs and enrolment all play into how the priority list is sorted.

"From there, it's almost the biggest bang for your buck; which areas do you want to make the biggest improvements in?" says Awender.

Third and fourth on the priority list are a new Prince Andrew school and a new Gosfield North school respectively.
