Fired Amherstburg Firefighters Raise Concerns

Two former Amherstburg firefighters are questioning the training standards at the department.

Keith Lauzon and Dave Wharram were fired on June 3 last year along with then-chief Randy Sinasac.

Lauzon and Wharram were back at Amherstburg Town Hall on Monday night addressing council and pointing to an Ontario Fire Marshal review as showing a gap in training, but current chief Al Reaume says that's not the case.

"The officers here are very well trained. I've seen them function at a number of fires. They're trained as well as anybody in Essex County," says Reaume.

Lauzon says they're not looking to attack the fire department or scare residents.

"It's not to tear them down, it is not to instill fear in our residents but to tell them, 'Look we have some problems and we need to be there to make sure that we meet those requirements that the OFM has laid out," says Lauzon.

The Ministry of Labour issued 23 work orders to the fire department related to health and safety last year after complaints were received by the ministry.

"We've dealt with all of those issues. We've dealt with the Ministry of Labour orders. The ministry is satisfied now," says Reaume. "The past is the past. Let's just move forward."
