Hugh Beaton Closure Review Delayed

Trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board are delaying a decision on a review of seven city central elementary schools to its May 17 meeting.

The review could see Hugh Beaton Public School closed with its students consolidated at John Campbell Public School after a six room addition.

Hugh Beaton parent Matt Earish is concerned by the potential closure.

"Our daughter is only in Grade 1 and our whole goal as parents is to give her stability; putting her in a school for her entire school career up until Grade 8 and then she can move onto high school," says Earish. "That's important to us."

Earish says the Hugh Beaton school community was surprised to see the school considered for closure.

"When you look at the Beaton enrolment numbers things look fairly strong, fairly consistent and I think this is a pretty good school and it's consistent," says Earish.

Trustees voiced their displeasure in the streamlined review process administration recommended instead of the standard process which would add a second public meeting and wrap up two months later.

Earish was happy to hear trustees favoured the longer process.

"The rushed way is the wrong way. We're going to come to decisions that probably haven't been well vetted," says Earish.

Another part of the proposal would see a new K-8 school built to consolidate students from Queen Victoria and Prince Edward public schools. Begley Public School is also part of the proposed review administration is looking to undertake as it wrestles with declining enrolment and empty student spaces in its schools.
