Amherstburg Establishes Policing Committee

The Town of Amherstburg is establishing a policing advisory committee as it waits for a cost break down from the OPP.

Amherstburg began looking at alternatives to the town's force in January 2015. They've received interest from the Windsor Police Service and are also researching the possibility of a regional force with LaSalle and Essex.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo expects it could be a year before the municipality hears back from the OPP.

"It's my understanding that they do about four municipalities at time and they are in the process of doing four and if my information is correct the next four after that have already been decided. So at this point I believe we're trying to get into that next set," says DiCarlo.

Due to the delay DiCarlo says they are not in any hurry to receive Windsor's cost breakdown.

"Ideally it'd be nice to get all the costing in at about around the same time so that we don't have any inflation issues or anything like that," says DiCarlo.

In the meantime he says they will continue discussions with LaSalle and Essex to explore what a regional police force might look like.
