A Windsor-based production company hopes to see the city's film industry expand by promoting feature films in the area.
Rhys Trenhaile, from Black Coal Films, says feature film making can be costly. However, 80% of the money ends up going back into the city.
"You have to buy hotel rooms, food, rent cars, rent moving vehicles, the list goes on and on," says Trenhaile."That's a direct benefit to Windsor and I don't think a lot of people realize this."
Windsor's low housing costs are enough to attract crew and actors to live rather than more costly cities like Toronto, however, there needs to be enough annual productions to keep the work flowing.
"If you can get to about four movies a year shot in Windsor, then you can create a steady film industry." says Trenhaile, "You just need a place where a commissioner can exist and people gather to put projects together because they are in the same general facility."
Trenhaile says the company has obtained strong financial backing so far and expects funding to grow rapidly over the next year.
Black Coal Film's slasher flick The Scarehouse was distributed in North America by NBC Universal. Trenhail's most recent film The Performance is scheduled to be released internationally this summer.
