Appeal Set For Opt Out Campaign

An urgent appeal date has been scheduled in Toronto to hear why Windsor and Tecumseh should be allowed to continue its bingo lawsuit opt out campaign without court restriction.

Last month a Superior Court judge ruled the joint campaign crosses a line and ordered both municipalities to stop releasing any new information. Anything existing, such as billboards and websites, may stay up.

Last week lawyers for Windsor and Tecumseh announced they will be appealing the decision.

The appeal will be heard before the Ontario Court of Appeal on February 25.

The current court order being appealed does not allow either municipality to make any further public comment on the campaign.

City officials have said the lawsuit could end up costing taxpayers more than $70-million between both municipalities. The lawsuit claims Windsor and Tecumseh have been collecting excessive licensing fees for charity bingo events dating back to 1993.
