Amherstburg Mulls A New Policing Offer

Amherstburg's mayor hasn't received a formal proposal but says he welcomes an offer to share policing with the Town of LaSalle.

LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya made the offer last week after rejecting the City of Windsor's proposal to form a regional force with his town and Amherstburg. But, Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says if town council does go that way, it may eventually form a regional police force including LaSalle and Essex.

"LaSalle's offer is interesting in that we are geographically attached," says DiCarlo. "The conversation in that respect may actually go more towards a regional police force as opposed to LaSalle offering Amherstburg policing."

DiCarlo says the town is still mulling over offers from Windsor and the Ontario Provincial Police.

Many in Amherstburg say they want to keep the police force they have, and DiCarlo admits ultimately, it may. He just wants to examine all the town's options.

"In doing our due diligence, we, at least, have to investigate."

He expects the CAOs of Amherstburg and LaSalle will meet soon to discuss the offer.
