Mayor Defends 'Opt Out' Campaign

The City of Windsor is starting to get feedback from its campaign that encourages local charities to opt out of a class-action lawsuit that could cost Windsor and Tecumseh more than $70-million.

The lawsuit involves any organization that paid a license fee to conduct a fundraising bingo event dating back to 1993.

"This is a period of time that was granted by the court. The start date was chosen by the court, the end date was chosen by the court and at the end of the day we have a responsibility to make sure that we're taking care of the city. Making sure that we're taking care of the best interest of the taxpayers," says Mayor Drew Dilkens.

Dilkens says he's heard some criticism regarding the cost of the campaign but he believes it's necessary.

"The fact of the matter is there are a whole host of organizations, I would say hundreds of organizations, that don't even know that they're included as part of this (lawsuit)," says Dilkens.

Charities have until May 15 to opt out of the lawsuit. Dilkens says at least two charities have already chosen to opt out.
