Essex Considering New Electoral Format

How the municipal council in Essex is elected is under review.

A report is due back in the spring outlining electoral options after Councillor Sherry Bondy raised concerns about how a council vote is used to appoint the deputy mayor in Essex.

Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche feels it's a good conversation to have, but says there is a bigger issue with the format in Essex than how the deputy mayor is picked.

"I personally want to look at this because I think that we should be looking at a ward system as well and revamping maybe how we choose," says Meloche. "I don't believe in a system where some wards have one member of council elected and other wards have two members of council elected."

Wards 1 and 3 in Essex are each represented by two councillors while Wards 2 and 4 are each represented by a single councillor.

Meloche has served as the deputy mayor in Essex for three straight terms of council — including the current term.
