Amherstburg Requests Windsor Policing Costs

The Town of Amherstburg is looking to the Windsor Police Service for potential savings.

It's just one option Amherstburg is considering along with a regional police force with Essex and the OPP.

"It's pretty well known for four out of the five years now we've been named the safest community in all of Canada so as far as policing goes we're obviously very happy with our police force," says Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. "But we do still feel we need to do our due diligence in comparing our options. The most obvious being the savings in infrastructure."

DiCarlo estimates there could be a potential savings of $1-million a year. He says there is no immediate timeline for a decision as they are still waiting on all costing reports.

Back in March a petition of nearly 1,200 signatures supported keeping the current Amherstburg police force.

In previous talks with Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens, Dicarlo has been non-committal. LaSalle's mayor, who is wedged between both municipalities, has been clear he isn't interested in regional policing.
