Aburg Workers Vote For Strike Action

Workers with the Town of Amherstburg have voted 100% in favour of walking off the job if they can't reach a contract soon.

The workers are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 636 Unit 27. Their contract doesn't expire until December 31, but talks between town and union officials started earlier this month, and IBEW business manager Brian Manniger says they went nowhere fast.

"A year ago we had discussions with the employer and entered into a one-year contract extension because of the financial problems they were having," says Manninger. "They came back at us with 35 pages of concessions."

If they do strike, Manniger says it won't take residents long to notice.

"They plow your roads. They look after your arenas. They look after your parks. They do all the services in town hall. They repair your water lines."

Out of 55 members, 43 voted in favour of strike action.

The two sides meet with a conciliator December 7.
