Harrow High Fight Not Over

Essex councillors are still trying to figure out how to keep Harrow District High School open, looking for another meeting with the public school board over the decision to close the school.

Councillor Randy Voakes isn't ready to give up the fight to keep Harrow's high school open.

"We know what bullying does in school and now the new kids show up; they're the new kids from the outside trying to find their place in a school," says Voakes. "This board has given us no opportunity to have the candid discussions with them about that."

Town CAO Russ Phillips pointed out to council a meeting including trustees from the Greater Essex County District School Board, councillors and administration had taken place prior to the decision to close the school.

Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche says council needs to explore other options to keep the school open before meeting again with school officials.

"They've heard everything that we have to say. They understand what it's going to do to the community. They've been presented with that. They understand how the community feels. We have to go there with some new material," says Meloche.

Town administration has been directed by council to set up a meeting with the school board, but not before exploring options to keep the school open including securing legal advice and meeting with Ontario's Special Advisor on Community Hubs Karen Pitre.
