Fewer Tulips At Jackson Park

About 20,000 tulips won't be planted in the fountain area at Jackson Park next Spring.

City staff discovered a fungus in the sunken garden area of the park. The horticulture department will leave that section in a furrow state and the spores should die off.

They say the spores aren't a threat to human or animal health.

If flowers were planted in the fungus-infested area, it would spread and damage nearby healthy flowers.

“This is disappointing, because we know how much residents and visitors enjoy the flowers in the sunken garden,” says Horticulture Manager Dave Tootill. “But by leaving this area furrow, we’ll be able to ensure the rest of Jackson Park remains beautiful.”

About 10,000 tulips will still be planted in other areas at Jackson Park.

The sunken gardens won't be completely dead. City staff will plant annuals a little early to brighten up the space.
