Creating Healthy Lifestyles In Windsor-Essex

The City of Windsor and County of Essex are getting $525,000 to promote healthy living, through the province's Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

Associate Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dipika Damerla says it's about making healthy lifestyles fun for children and families.

"It doesn't have to be 60 minutes of exercise (a day)," explains Damerla. "It's 20 minutes of play here, walking to school 20 minutes back and forth, and you're already at 60 minutes."

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara says Windsor and Essex County have already spent millions of dollars building new pools, arenas, playgrounds and trails, so this extra funding will mainly help to create programs which make use of the existing facilities and promote them.

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is happening in 44 other Ontario communities.
