New Driving Laws Now Enforceable

Cyclists who travel the "Dougall death trap" and other narrow roads are especially welcoming new traffic laws that come into effect September 1.

Motorists must now leave a one-metre gap between cyclists, even on roads without bike lanes such as Dougall Ave. near EC Row.

Lori Newton with Bike Friendly Windsor Essex says most drivers are courteous, but some simply don't care.

"It's terrifying when a car comes so close to you that you can feel the heat from its motor," she says. "We have to remember that cyclists are people."

Drivers who don't leave enough space could get a $110 fine and lose two demerit points. Newton predicts a lot of bikers are going to take enforcement into their own hands.

"I think that there are going to be a lot of cyclists with GoPro (cameras) who are going to be recording any driver who is (too close) and then reporting that," she says

Newton hopes the new laws will raise awareness and educate drivers to be safe around cyclists. "At the end of the day it's really only a couple of seconds in your ride."

Another new law -- if you open your door in the path of a cyclist, you may be hit with a $365 fine and three demerit points.

Cyclists who don't have the proper lights and reflectors will face a $110 fine.

Distracted driving fines will also increase to $490 and three demerit points. Novice drivers caught will receive a minimum 30-day suspension for first conviction, the OPP warns.

The move-over law now also applies to tow trucks, in addition to emergency vehicles. Fines are $490. School buses are now the only buses allowed to be chrome yellow, making them more recognizable, officials say.
