Problems Over New Community Mailboxes

Unsafe locations, little to no lighting and poor installation are just some of the concerns surrounding new community mailboxes.

Windsor city council has agreed to send a letter to Canada Post seeking better consultation in the location of new mailboxes.

Michelle Johnson with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 630 says this was a rush job from the start.

"Most are temporarily secured in an unsafe manner, with gravel dropped and graded up to 18" in depth sloping up to a cement pad," she says. "These are inaccessible to wheelchairs, walkers and unsafe for the elderly and those with balance issues."

About 175 community mailboxes have been installed in Tecumseh.

Johnson says Canada Post should consult with the city before it installs the estimated 2,000 mailboxes in Windsor as they phase out door-to-door delivery.
