Kingsville's Jakait Drain Work Starts

After two years, work on the Jakait Drain in Kingsville is finally ready to start next month.

The work is expected to cost $285,000, and Mayor Nelson Santos says it should spur investment in new industrial lands and fix flooding problems in the area. "Flooding will not go back onto the industrial lands behind the property on Jakait Rd. 2 and the new expanded areas will have their own drainage system to accommodate their runoff and their water."

There was only one bidder for the project, but Santos isn't concerned. "Because of the value of the project, we did have an invitation bid for four contractors. Only one chose to provide a bid," he says. "The bid came back about 3% or 4% over the engineer's estimate, reasonable in terms of other costs that we've seen."

While the Jakait Drain is the largest rural drain project in this year's budget, it's not the biggest overall. The drain project on Wigle Ave. is expected to cost almost $2-million.
