An unsuccessful candidate in Windsor's last municipal election now faces a complaint about his campaign expenses.
Community activist Paul Synnott filed the complaint. Synnott was involved in the campaigns of a number of candidates in last fall's vote.
The complaint alleges Gabe Maggio accepted a donation from a Michigan resident for $500. Under the Municipal Election Act, only monetary donations from Ontario residents, corporations, and trade unions are acceptable.
The complaint also alleges Maggio's campaign failed to list a donation in kind from Bluesfest for a tent erected during last summer's event, and the use of Maggio's office as his campaign headquarters.
The deadline to file complaints was last Thursday and Windsor's manager of records and elections Chuck Scarpelli says Synnott filed an application for a compliance audit to the city clerk's office at 1:30pm Thursday.
Scarpelli says the application goes to the city's compliance audit committee next which will decide whether to accept or reject it. "If they grant the application, they will hire an auditor to go over all of his finances."
If an auditor's report finds evidence of wrongdoing, Maggio's case will go before a judge who will decide guilt and if necessary, what penalty to impose.
