Jihad Set For Sentencing

A Windsor man, found guilty of attacking a 13-year-old boy with a hammer, is refusing a psychiatric assessment and will be sentenced in late July.

Rafid Jihad's defense lawyer Frank Retar did discuss with his client whether or not to take the assessment, but is only saying it was Jihad's decision to make. "Mr. Jihad, from the beginning, was assessed to determine whether he was fit to stand trial. And following the fitness assessment that was made of him, he felt uncomfortable participating in any other psychiatric assessments."

Retar says attempted murder charges usually carry a jail sentence of between five and seven years.

He'll be asking for less than five for his client, as Jihad will have served more than one year behind bars by the time his sentence is given on July 23.
