Pelee Islander Being Replaced

A new $40-million ferry is going to service Pelee Island.

The Ontario government awarded the contract to ASENAV, a ship-building company in Chile.

The new ferry is replacing the 55-year-old M.V. Pelee Islander. The M. V. Jiimaan will continue to service Pelee Island.

According to the province, the new ferry will carry the same 399 passengers as the Jiimaan and will help transport more than 60,000 visitors and residents travelling to the island each year.

"This new ferry will help keep goods and people moving in one of the most beautiful regions of Ontario. This project is proof of our government's commitment to making the daily commute and quality of life better for Ontario residents," says Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca in a news release.

The new ferry is expected to start operating in 2018.
