More Downtown Kingsville Parking Needed

Parking in downtown Kingsville is sometimes hard to come by, which is why town council is considering changes.

Mayor Nelson Santos says council might decide to collect fees from businesses for parking. "The municipality has in the past few years invested several thousands of dollars in purchasing new property for the purpose of parking lots and parking spaces," he says. "The question that's being brought forward to both the BIA and inner-business sector is what is a fair approach in trying to deal with future parking needs."

Santos isn't ruling out parking meters making a return. "I think that would be a discussion the table could have in terms of if the business community feels that's something that would be of value versus charging each business," Santos says. "For Kingsville, (free parking) has been a trademark of ours for a couple of decades now, certainly one we would like to maintain."

Currently, parking is free in downtown Kingsville with a two-hour limit. Santos says the next step is to consult businesses, the BIA and the community.
