The union that represents postal workers hopes Kingsville Council will stand behind its fight to keep door-to-door delivery.
Canada Post has already started phasing it out in some Canadian communities. It's at the centre of a current court battle in Hamilton where the city is fighting to control where the corporation puts community mailboxes.
At a public meeting in Kingsville last night, Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 500 President Susan Markham believes an expansion of services, not contraction, is the future of Canada Post.
Canada Post argues the growth of email is partly to blame for the decision to cut services, but Markham suggests it's not being totally honest about its finances. "We've given back almost $2-billion to the government, from a doomed corporation," she says. "I think there's a little bit of statistically shadiness in some of the facts and figures that Canada Post is presenting."
She says most people she talks to are aghast when they find out Canada Post plans to end door-to-door delivery. "We're kinda typically Canadian in a lot of ways. We just kind of say well somebody else can take it on," says Markham. "What we're saying is somebody else can't take it on."
