Claims Against Windsor Increase

Windsor city council will digest a report at its Monday night meeting that says liability claims last year increased from 2013 in large part because of harsh winter weather.

The number of claims made because of slips and falls in 2014 was 82, the highest in five years. While 11 of those claims have been settled, 71 remain outstanding. The 2014 Risk Management Report says those claims typically take longer to resolve because of their severity.

The number of claims because of sewer backups is down. There were 26 claims made in 2014 compared to 80 in 2013. In 2010, those reached a five-year high with 314 claims.

The total number of claims made against the City of Windsor was 409 claims last year, down from the five-year high in 2010 with 734. Claims in 2014 are expected to cost the city $2,138,340.

There were also 73 incidents where the city incurred a loss. So far, 72 are outstanding and involve a third party. Only one claim, fire damage at the old Wickes Plant, has been settled.

Meanwhile, the city's insurance costs are going up. Windsor's premium for 2015 is 26% above the cost of insurance paid in 2014.
