Union Head Gives Budget C+

There are things in Thursday's provincial budget the president of Unifor Local 200 doesn't like, but overall Chris Taylor would give it a C+.

"Most of it, I would estimate, is based on what she (Premier Kathleen Wynne) put out prior to the election campaign last year. We were pleased with the budget last year," says Taylor.

However, he admits he wishes the Liberal government had budgeted more for health care and education. "The percentage increases don't seem to match what most analysts are saying is required."

As for the plan to sell 60% of Hydro One, "we've got enough competitive issues," says Taylor. He fears privatization will raise energy prices.

The Liberals get credit for boosting spending for the job creation fund. "They are actually trying to put some youth initiatives in place," Taylor says. Funding for the jobs fund will go up to $2.7-billion from $2.5-billion. "That's the biggest portion of unemployed people in the province, so anything they can do around that is welcomed."

Taylor is very critical of Tuesday's federal budget. "It was a complete sham. I believe that budget is more of a ransom note than a budget. Everything in there is only if you agree to elect us."
