LaSalle Considering Transit

The Town of LaSalle is looking to see if a public transit system makes sense for the community.

Mayor Ken Antaya says council needs some answers before committing any money to public transit.

"First of all, if there's a demand for it," says Antaya. "Where that demand is, how affordable it can be and whether or not we include joining municipalities as well."

A cost estimate for the service hasn't been provided by the town, but Antaya says the report expected back to council sometime in the fall will have that information.

"We can put two and two together when you start taking a look at what the cost of a bus is and how much it costs you to put a person in that bus," says Antaya. "It's never ever going to pay for itself. Transit is like pretty well any other municipal service, it's a service to the community and you're going to have to fund a portion of it."

A request for proposals will be issued by the town looking for a firm to carry out the feasibility study. Options coming back to council will include a stand-alone service as well as a shared service with Windsor and Amherstburg.
