No Date For Nesbeth Appeal

An appeal date has yet to be scheduled for a fired Windsor police officer as she continues to collect wages, totaling more than $400,000 since the process started.

The Windsor Police Services Board sent a letter to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission asking the Dorothy Nesbeth appeal be expedited.

Board member Jo-Anne Gignac says she's disappointed the appeal won't be fast-tracked. "There's no doubt in my mind that both police services board that I've talked to, other members and the community are always a little dismayed in terms of the timelines," says Gignac. "But it is a legal process and people are entitled to their recourse under the law and we have to respect that."

In its written response, the commission says "it will pay close attention to ensure that the parties comply with the prescribed timelines and that there are no undue delays in hearing and deciding this important appeal."

Nesbeth was fired on December 19 and an appeal was filed two days later, which is when she was put back on police payroll. In July 2010, Nesbeth attempted to cross the Ambassador Bridge without declaring a large quantity of alcohol.
