Amherstburg Councillors Undergo Ministry Training

Amherstburg town councillors have taken another step to avoid future financial issues by taking part in a training session.

The training was one of 41 recommendations in a financial management review conducted by Deloitte. The review was conducted after it was revealed the town had racked up more than $40-million in debt, and misplaced $6-million from the town's reserve.

Officials from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs led the training session, which was held Thursday evening.

"It was general training... a broad overview of the role of council as individuals and as a whole, and how they fit into the governance of the town," says Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. "Any amount of training is good moving forward. Even if it's stuff I've heard before, it just helps reinforce what you've learned in the past. Since council hasn't had training yet, I think it was very effective for us."

DiCarlo says, while it hasn't been discussed, council is open to any kind of further training in the future.
