Ministry Training For Amherstburg Councillors

Following a recommendation out of last year's report on Amherstburg's finances, town councillors are getting some training from Ministry of Municipal Affairs officials.

The review conducted by Deloitte following revelations the town had wracked up more than $40-million in debt, and misplaced $6-million from the town's reserve made 41 recommendations.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says the previous council decided to hold off on training until the new council was sworn in. He believes the training session Thursday will help councillors better understand their obligations. "I guess it depends on background, right?" Says DiCarlo. "The Deloitte report explained that they didn't believe the past council, and perhaps the new council, didn't have enough background or understanding of what's required in the day-to-day dealings with the town. Training never hurts, right?"

DiCarlo calls the training session long overdue, saying it was further delayed by scheduling conflicts.

He says whether there will be more sessions will depend on the comfort level of councillors following the training session.
