The Greater Essex County District School Board wants to better promote the trades.
It's setting up a committee to see what's being done at each of its high schools, and then will assess what improvements need to be made from there.
Trustee Dave Taves presented the idea at the most recent public school board meeting. "I started my career in the trades, and there was government money to motivate kids to join back then," explains the trustee. "I think it came up during the election (last fall), and definitely some of the new trustees want to know where we are with it. So this is a good opportunity for us to all get on the same page."
Taves says administration's already collected some information on this issue, which they'll have to present to the board. After that, the committee will take tours of schools and talk to teachers, students and consultants about what they feel needs to be done.
