Bain Disappointed In US

The federal government is footing the bill to build a new customs plaza in Detroit for the new international crossing and Essex County Warden Tom Bain is pleased to hear the news.

However, Bain feels Canada shouldn't have to do all the heavy lifting in the estimated $4-billion project.

"Bit of disappointment in the fact that a nation the size of the United States isn't coming to the table with cash in hand," says Bain. "I'm pleased to see that our federal government has worked out that we'll get the money back, it's just a bit disappointing that we have to be there and front the project."

Transport Minister Lisa Raitt says the money will be recouped through tolls on the new bridge between Windsor and Detroit.

"We ship a lot of fruits, a lot of vegetables over into the states," says Bain, hearing from a couple of county greenhouse operators how important the bridge project is. "You can't have a delay in shipping when you're handling fruits and vegetables because a day or two hold up and your whole shipment is gone."
