New Fiscal Chapter For Tecumseh

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara says residents in his town should get used to low tax increases.

Council finalized its $34.8-million budget last night, with a 0.8% tax increase, which equals $7.58 on a $200,000 home.

After multiple years of levies higher than 5%, McNamara thinks it's time to start a new trend. "In the 25 years I've been involved in municipal government, I've never seen a Tecumseh budget come in this low. And that's good news. But there's no question, it's been a tough road for the last ten years to get our fiscal house in order."

Anticipating the school board and county budgets, Tecumseh figures the levy should reach as low as 0.27%. And if Essex County Council can find further efficiencies, McNamara says that number could get knocked down to 0%.
