United Way Half Way There

Halfway through its annual fundraising campaign, the United Way of Windsor-Essex County is halfway to its fundraising goal.

So far, it's raised $2.66-million towards its $5.2-million goal.

CEO Lorraine Goddard says the agency will be able to help 50,000 people if it reaches its goal. "Poverty costs everyone and it's costing our community over $450-million a year because of the increased use of a number of services."

Goddard praises the community for its generosity but admits fundraising has become more difficult in the past couple of years. "There's increasing competition for charitable dollars," she says. "And we know that some of the jobs that have come into our community over the last few years aren't as well paying as they have been in the past."

The agency fundraises all year long, but Goddard plans to submit a final report on this campaign at the end of March.
