The Windsor Police Service is introducing its new Tactical Rescue Vehicle.
It's essentially a 10-ton armoured military vehicle, built in 1978 which has been retrofitted and stripped of its weapons.
Special Constable John Nayduk is training 12 officers on how to drive the TRV, and says it'll only be used in extreme scenarios when weapons are involved. "There was a case in Saskatoon earlier this year where they used their armoured vehicle to rescue civilians that were caught in a crossfire. And maybe we're not going to need it for a couple of years, but the one time that we do, we're going to be very glad we had it."
The vehicle was decommissioned by the Canadian Department of National Defence, which allowed Windsor police to buy it for just $1 back in April of 2013. It was then retrofitted for $13,000, and is expected to cost about $1,000 to run each year. These types of vehicles typically cost between $300,000 and $400,000 when purchased new.
