County Council Wraps Term

Essex County Warden Tom Bain calls the most recent term of council extremely successful.

Wednesday night marked the last meeting of the current council before the newly elected mayors and deputy mayors of the county municipalities meet as the new council on December 10.

Bain points to reaching debt freedom as a major success of the term.

"When you've got zero debt, that's something that's been looked at from other counties across all of Ontario," says Bain, adding he would have liked to have seen more done on the issue of transit. "If we're going to continue to be a leader throughout southwestern Ontario and continue to get jobs, we need to take another look at a transportation system that's throughout Windsor and Essex County."

Kingsville Deputy Mayor Tamara Stomp, Tecumseh Deputy Mayor Cheryl Hardcastle, Leamington Deputy Mayor Charlie Wright, LaSalle Deputy Mayor Mark Carrick, Amherstburg Mayor Wayne Hurst and Deputy Mayor Ron Sutherland won't be returning as county councillors. Essex Town Council has yet to select its deputy mayor who will serve as a county representative along with re-elected mayor Ron McDermott.
