Amherstburg, IBEW Agree To Extension

The Town of Amherstburg and its unionized staff are agreeing to a one-year extension with no pay increase.

Council approved the contract extension with its IBEW workers on Monday night in a 4-3 vote.

"On its surface, I mean if you have a bargaining unit prepared to take no increase for a year, I mean that's pretty considerate of them," says Aldo DiCarlo, mayor-elect in Amherstburg. "I guess I'm just a bit leary because, again there was a split room and you know I'd be the first one to say, 'why do we have such division if it's a good thing?'"

Councillor Diane Pouget was among the votes against the extension arguing the decision should fall on the newly elected council.

Amherstburg CAO John Miceli says the extension will reduce budget pressures with the deal creating $54,000 in savings for the town.
