New Cycling Laws Welcome

A local cycling advocate is hopeful new recommended amendments to the Highway Traffic Act will help keep cyclists safe on Windsor roads.

The biggest change would make it mandatory to give cyclists a meter buffer zone when passing them in a vehicle.

Chair of the Windsor Bicycling Committee Chris Waters says the new legislation will help encourage a safer cycling culture. "Giving cyclists a meter bubble is a way of not only increasing safety, it gives everyone a little more reaction time but it's also a way of making everyone feel safe on the road and a way of encouraging cycling."

The legislation would also increase fines for motorists who "door" cyclists to $1,000.
