Officials with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal say a massive fire at the former Wickes bumper plant was set intentionally and caused $1-million damage.

The fire started in the office area of the plant in the 9100-block of Tecumseh Rd.E. The front portion of the building collapsed, and heavy machinery has been brought in to clear away debris.

At one point, fire officials urged nearby residents to stay indoors as clouds of thick, black smoke filled the air.

The City of Windsor took over the property in 2010 for remediation. At the time of the fire, there were no chemicals stored at the site.
