Windsor and Detroit officials are tag teaming to bring a major sports event back to the area.

A bid to host Wrestlemania 31 and/or 32 in 2015/16 has been submitted to the WWE for consideration. Detroit Sports Commission Executive Director Dave Beachnau says an emphasis on the international appeal of hosting the event at Ford Field gives them an edge.

“It’s appealing because a lot of these international organizations draw from not just the United States or Canada but from around the world so there’s a certain appeal I think with a border that separates us that they can visit two nations in essentially one destination.”

The winning cities to host Wrestlemania 31 and 32 will be announced August 1. Detroit hosted Wrestlemania in 2007 at Ford Field. Both Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis and Gordon Orr with Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island are members of the host committee . If the bid is successful promotional events leading up to Wrestlemania would be held in Windsor.
