NHL Draft Takes Three Sting Players

Three members of the Sarnia Sting were drafted into the NHL Saturday.

All of the Sarnia players were drafted during the later rounds of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, which concluded Saturday at the United Center in Chicago.

Each player is expected to return to the Sting next season unless they are signed to an NHL entry level contract and assigned to their team's organization when the NHL season begins.

Centre Adam Ruzicka was taken in the fourth round by the Calgary Flames, with the 109th overall pick. The 18-year-old Slovakian was a Sting rookie this past season, scoring 25 goals for 46 points and 30 penalty minutes.

In the fifth round, centre Drake Rymsha was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings with the 138th overall pick in the draft. The Kings received that pick in a trade via the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rymsha, 18, began this past season with the Ottawa 67s before being traded to Sarnia. Since the trade, he scored 15 goals for 29 points over 37 regular season games. He also scored one goal during the OHL playoffs. Rymsha is a native of Huntington Woods, Michigan, outside Detroit.

Ryan McGregor was the third Sarnia player drafted Saturday. The 18-year-old from Burlington, Ont. played 65 games last season in Sarnia and scored 14 goals for 27 points during the regular season, along with a goal and an assist during the playoffs. McGregor was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
