Attack Maul Sting in Sarnia 9-3

Matt Schmalz and Petrus Palmu scored two each as the Owen Sound Attack manhandled the Sarnia Sting 9-3 Sunday at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

The Attack are at third place in the OHL Western Conference with 94 points, while the Sting hold themselves at 67 points and sit in the final playoff position, which remains open.

Schamlz got the Attack on the board first with his 15th goal of the season, at a little over three minutes into the opening period.  Sarnia countered later in the frame with a short-handed goal from Anthony Salinitri.  Owen Sound responded with two more goals before the first intermission, from Palmu on the power play, then from Ethan Szypula at even-strength.

Franco Sproviero pulled the Sting to within one to start the second period, with his 14th goal of the year.  Owen Sound then exploded with four unanswered goals in the frame.  Zachary Roberts put the Attack up by two again at 4:52, followed by a score 28 seconds later from Maksim Sushko.  The other two goals in the period came off the sticks of Markus Phillips on the power play, and from Schmalz in his second goal of the game.  Sting goalie Justin Fazio was pulled for Aidan Hughes after allowing the seven goals.

Palmu's second goal came soon after the beginning of the third period, giving the Attack an 8-2 lead.  This was followed up by a power play goal from Cordell James.  Sarnia managed to get one more on the board when Drake Rymsha scored his 35th of the season.

Michael McNiven picked up 21 saves in goal for Owen Sound, who next face the Flint Firebirds at home Tuesday night.  Sarnia will host the Windsor Spitfires in their regular season home finale Wednesday night.
