Former captain of the Point Edward Pacers Liam Wright was taken ninth overall by the Brampton Excelsiors in the Major Series Lacrosse draft earlier this week.
A graduate of Northern Collegiate, Wright scored 60 goals and 147 points in 66 career games as a Pacer.
He finished his junior lacrosse career with Brampton's Junior 'A' team, which he says was great for his development.
"I had a really good playoff run with them and my General Manager said he'd talk to the senior team about being drafted. Still didn't really expect it until I got the phone call to tell me I'd been taken."
He says he was at the gym working out when he got a call from his mom.
After the news became official, the phone calls and texts from family and friends started to pour in.
"It was really great seeing the people that have supported me throughout the years shooting me text messages, my phone was blowing up for a fair bit of the day," says Wright.
"It was a shock, I don't think anyone in my family really expected it, especially to go so high in the draft, it was a good day."
General Manager of the Pt Edward Pacers Stephen Baker says the whole organization is tremendously proud.
"Last year Liam was a leader on and off the floor to a very young team and it's great to see him rewarded for all of his hard work."
"For a player to be drafted from our organization says that we are heading in the right direction and are developing kids to not only play at a higher level but to get noticed. This is a big moment for our organization and I'm sure that in future years we will be hearing more local names called."
Despite finishing the season in Junior 'A' with Brampton, Wright was officially drafted out of the Pacers organization. He says that made the experience all the more special.
"I pulled up the draft page and saw the big Pacers 'P' beside my name, definitely felt a bit of hometown pride."
Wright isn't sure if he will suit up with the Excelsiors this season or next because of school commitments, but says he plans to play for the organization at some point.
